‘Return must be voluntary’, UN on Pakistan’s plan to evict Afghan refugees

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has emphasized that the return of Afghan refugees from Pakistan must be voluntary and based on informed decisions.

The UNHCR's statement comes in response to the Pakistani government's plans to evict Afghan refugees who have been living in the country for decades. The Pakistani government has said that it will no longer extend the stay of Afghan refugees beyond June 30, 2023.

The UNHCR has expressed concern that the forced return of Afghan refugees could put them at risk of persecution and violence. The agency has urged the Pakistani government to reconsider its plans and to work with the UNHCR to ensure that any returns are voluntary and dignified.

The UNHCR has also called on the international community to provide support to Pakistan for hosting Afghan refugees for so many years. The agency said that the international community must also help to create conditions in Afghanistan that are conducive to the safe and voluntary return of refugees.

The situation of Afghan refugees in Pakistan is complex and delicate. The Pakistani government has legitimate concerns about the security and economic implications of hosting a large refugee population. However, the rights and well-being of Afghan refugees must also be taken into account.

The UNHCR is committed to working with the Pakistani government and the international community to find a solution that is fair and humane for all involved.
